Woman wondering about dental implant recovery

Missing teeth can take a real toll on your daily life. Everyday tasks like talking, eating, or smiling might start to feel stressful. Thankfully, your dentist is able to help with dental implants! This restorative treatment is a reliable, long-term tooth replacement option. However, as you delve into the world of this procedure, you may be curious about what the recovery process looks like. Here are five common questions people ask about post-op dental implant surgery, along with their answers!

Can I Drive Myself Home from Dental Implant Surgery?

During the procedure of having dental implants places, sedation or anesthesia are commonly used. They help ensure your comfort during the surgery but can lower your alertness and coordination. It can even take up to 24 hours for them to leave your system! For that reason and to ensure your safety, you should ask someone that you trust to drive you home.

Should I Be Concerned About Bleeding or Swelling?

Both bleeding and swelling are normal after the procedure! Bleeding may occur for up to 48-72 hours after surgery; however, you can manage it by gently biting on clean gauze. Also, try to avoid spitting and rinsing during this time, as it can cause the area to bleed a bit more.

Facial swelling can last for several days but should lessen within a week or so after the surgery. You can help minimize it by applying an ice pack to your face for the first 24 hours!

Should I Expect Pain After Getting Dental Implants?

Local anesthetic usually wears off within two to four hours after surgery, so you may start to experience some discomfort. However, you can help manage it by taking prescribed or over-the-counter medication as instructed. It’s also recommended to get plenty of rest so your body can focus on healing! Overall, any discomfort you feel should be easily manageable and fade within a few days.

How Soon Can I Return to My Daily Routine?

Many people feel ready to work again even a couple of days after getting dental implants. However, everyone is different, so it will depend on how you are feeling. It’s important to listen to your body so you don’t overexert yourself. Any strenuous activities can slow down healing, and it’s recommended to avoid them for about three days.

How Do I Know When to Call My Dentist?

Any concerns you have while recovering are enough to give your dentist a call! However, you should contact them if you notice any of the following:

  • Severe pain or swelling that doesn’t improve with time
  • A high fever or other signs of infection
  • A lot of pus around the implant site
  • Your dental implant feels unstable or loose

When you choose to get dental implants, you should feel confident about every step of the way! You can always talk to your dentist about what to expect post-op and how to ensure the healing journey is as smooth as it can be.
